“Sensing Chirality in Supramolecular Systems”

Chirality is an important feature of supramolecular systems of the biogenic origin. Among various spectroscopies that probe handedness, Vibrational Optical Activity (VOA) holds a special place due to its very high sensitivity to both chirality and the molecular structure.

VOA refers to two vibrational techniques: Vibrational Circular Dichroism (VCD) and Raman Optical Activity (ROA) that are sensitive to chirality derivatives of infrared absorption and Raman spectroscopies, respectively.

In the lecture, the basics of the VOA methods will be introduced in a simple manner, followed by presentation of two supramolecular systems that show exceptionally enhanced VOA signal, i.e., amyloid fibrils and carotenoid aggregates.
